VCDS NEWS
07/25/07

June’s Rawhyde Adventure Rider Challenge was more fun than a barrel full of dual-sporters. Several VCDS riders were in attendance – in fact, if we had had a barrel, we probably could have filled it:

I suppose I should share that I placed first in my engine class and third overall in the Challenge, and won about 47 billion dollars’ worth of gear as a result. The Challenge and other June events took a lot out of me, however; I spent most of this month in my dirt-filled coffin in the basement. However, I’m out again, burning up wooden stakes in the fire pit and spraying Round-Up on the garlic plants, as usual. Er, and planning rides. Here’s what’s in the offing:

The RawHyde class designed specifically for VCDSRS riders is tentatively planned for September, when things cool off a bit. More on that later. In keeping with the idea of avoiding hard riding in the heat, I am toying with two ideas for August:

One is an easy BAP ride (that is, Bring A Passenger) that might involve a picnic or at least a pleasant post-ride lunch in Ojai. A BAP ride would be an opportunity to bring an interested non-rider, or a new rider, along – either on their own bike, or on yours, if you have a graphic on the back of your jacket which you would like to hide. The off-road portion will be scenic and less challenging than even DSR 01. I’m aiming for a (comparatively) short, relaxing and sociable ride, here.

The other idea I am toying with is an evening ride to a local hot spring. That would look like an out-in-the-light, back-in-the-dark ride. There are two options I can think of for this, one involving Santa Barbara and very nice, fairly simple unpaved riding, and the other involving Ojai, shorter distance, and all pavement. This one would also be good for bringing a guest.

I’ll let those thoughts stew for a bit, and see who comments or emails in favour of what. And, if you nag me a little, I might put together a Recap of the Adventure Challenge…

Huzzah! Another best-laid plan "gang agley" yet survived all the same.
