The desert is just beginning to green up! March will bring widespread desert blooms. What better time to while away a happy hundred-fifty odd miles of unpaved roads and trails, stretching from Bullhead to Barstow. Time to use up a day of sick leave, for we are riding the Mojave Road – the historic trail used by pioneers in covered wagons bound for Californ-eye-ay.
As overnights go, this one is on the light and fast side: The basic plan is to add a sleeping bag and a credit card to the usual day ride kit. We will depart from BMWoVC early Friday morning. Friday night we will camp or hotel it in the area of Laughlin, Nevada. Saturday we will ride the first half of our route, finishing with a side trip to Nipton, where we should find dinner, comfortable group camping, and even hot tubs, for a reasonable fee. Sunday after breakfast we will head back into the Preserve to pick up where we left off. We will finish the unpaved portion of the ride in Barstow and head home after a swell victory dinner.
This excursion will require intermediate dual sport skill level. Of great import is competence in sand. If you want to come on this ride and are concerned about your sand handling capabilities, check out DSS 04; a short day Skilzdrill ride scheduled for early March, focusing on sand skills.
