DS RIDE 09: SNAFU
The Forests are all closed due to fire, from Big Sur to Banning, and I don't expect them to re-open before the 4th. In fact, I don't expect them to open until after the first significant rain of the season.
Interestingly, Hungry Valley is still open. They may cave to peer pressure before long, but until they do, I thought we would plan to go there on Sunday, and explore some of the more remote and challenging trails. Other options I've considered are:
Right now I am opting for HVSRVA because it is close, we would have passed through anyway, and there are a lot of fun trails there. If several of you email me back in preference of one of these other options, I'll change this plan, but if nobody cares, or if everybody wants to do something different, the ride will go to HV.
Looking forward to your input...

The desert -- I'm not familiar with any of the areas, don't have good maps yet, and with local temps in the 70's for the next 15 days, I expect it to be hot. I'd rather avoid the heat, personally.
Sequoia National Forest -- Tempting. We could head out through the cooler part of the nw Mojave, up into the hills, and go explore. Again, I haven't done any research there, so there would be no guarantees, other than that we would cover a lot of ground, just getting there and back.
Pismo -- Last night I asked Simon & Lisa Thomas what riding skill they thought most valuable to practice before riding off into The Blue for years at a time: Sand. The Oceano Dunes SVRA is about 2 - 2.5 hr from here. It might be fun to clown around in the sand for a while, and then have a late lunch in Piz or Oceano and come home.
