DS Skilzdrill 01: INTRODUCTION

And now for something completely different…

In the interest of helping less experienced riders increase their skills more rapidly, and in order to give you die-hard VCDSRS vets a break from twelve-hour rides, meet the Skilz Drilz Series: A bunch of deeply instructional, completely low-key, no-longer-than-you-want, dual sport riding skill practice sessions in the local outback.

Unlike the DS Rides, which are designed to create a sense of exploration, adventure, and other cool intangibles too numerous to list, the SD Rides will serve as open-air guided forums for riders to repetitively practice a specific skill, analyse performance, and give and receive feedback to and from other riders.

Make these Drilz what you want them to be: If you want to come along and lounge around watching goofs like me fall over, bring a lounge chair. If you want to look over a twelve point moving body position analysis of your performance on each drill, showing position of head, shoulders, elbows, hands, hips, knees, and ankles, bring a video camera, laptop, and the needed software. I’ll bring the tripod. If you want to ride with the group until we get to our practice area, and then take off into the hills on your own, go baby go!

SDR 01 will focus on steering through corners with the rear tire. We will begin with skidding the rear tire in a straight line on straight trail, followed by skidding the rear tire progressively more to one side, finally skidding into / around a corner. Next, we will progress through a series of similar steps culminating in the use of throttle to cause the rear tire to power-slide around a corner.

Group size for SD Rides will be limited to 10 riders. If you would like to sign on for this ride, email ride leader Laine_MacTague@verizon.net.

Sometimes a little dab’ll do ya: “So Cool” straightens out the 1200 cc bumblebee after a short
power-slide, chasing Laine out of Shortcut Canyon, Angeles National Forest, DSR 04.

Huzzah! Another best-laid plan "gang agley" yet survived all the same.
